Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns.
The book takes place in Cold Sassy in 1905-1906 with a young boy Will Tweedy his parents and Grandpa, Miss Love and an entire town. It's hilariously funny, it's poignant, it's sad, it's witty, it's a historical snapshot, it's quintessentially southern. When Wills grandmother dies and his grandfather does not follow the prescribed mourning practices takes, the the town is turned upside down with gossip and scandal.
It's a beautiful story of a boy growing up in a small proper Southern town, he learns about love, gossip and the hurt it brings, religion and death. I give it 4 stars and a PG rating.
