The hand full of Jerry Spinelli books I have read seem to focus on the differences in race or personality and how hard it can be to bring them these differences together and function with any sort of grace.
Maniac Magee is a cute story of a boy whose parents pass away when he is six. He is eventually homeless and finds himself mingling with the west side (whites) and the east side (blacks) and not understanding why they can't mix.
As he struggles to find his place in the world he meets friends and may even find a place to call home.
This book is a John Newbery Award winner and is a great family read. It's rated PG and gets a 5 star rating.
